Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning — What's the Difference and When Do You Need Each?

One of the most common questions we get from businesses is: what's the difference between a deep clean and our regular daily cleaning? The answer matters — because confusing the two can leave your premises with hidden hygiene problems that routine cleaning simply doesn't reach.

What Is Regular Commercial Cleaning?

Regular commercial cleaning — also called daily or routine cleaning — covers the visible, high-traffic areas of your premises every working day. A typical daily clean includes:

  • Vacuuming and mopping floors
  • Emptying bins and replacing liners
  • Wiping down desks, surfaces, and touch points
  • Cleaning and restocking washrooms
  • Tidying kitchen and breakroom areas

This keeps your premises looking clean and presentable day to day. It's essential — but it doesn't reach everything.

What Is a Commercial Deep Clean?

A deep clean goes significantly further. It covers areas that daily cleaning doesn't reach and tasks that require specialist equipment or more time:

  • Carpet extraction — removing embedded dirt, allergens, and stains that vacuuming leaves behind
  • Machine scrubbing of hard floors — removing ingrained grime from grout lines and floor surfaces
  • Inside appliances — ovens, microwaves, fridges, and dishwashers
  • Behind and underneath furniture — areas that are moved for a deep clean and then replaced
  • Descaling of washroom fixtures — limescale on taps, showerheads, and tiles
  • Air vents and extractor fans — dust and grease accumulation that affects air quality
  • Upholstery cleaning — chairs, sofas, and soft furnishings
  • High-level cleaning — ceiling fixtures, light fittings, and tops of cupboards

How Often Does a Commercial Premises Need a Deep Clean?

Most commercial premises should have a deep clean every 3–6 months alongside their regular daily cleaning schedule. Some sectors require more frequent deep cleans:

  • Schools and nurseries — typically termly (3 times per year)
  • Medical and dental practices — quarterly or more frequently depending on CQC requirements
  • Restaurants and food service — monthly deep cleans of kitchen equipment are often a legal requirement
  • Gyms and leisure facilities — quarterly deep cleans of equipment and changing rooms

When Else Do You Need a Deep Clean?

Beyond periodic maintenance, there are specific situations that call for a one-off deep clean:

  • End of tenancy — before vacating a commercial premises
  • Post-construction or refurbishment — removing construction dust and debris
  • New premises — before moving in
  • Pre-inspection — before an Ofsted, CQC, or local authority inspection
  • Post-event — after a conference, open day, or large gathering
