Green Commercial Cleaning — What It Means and Why It Matters for Your Business

Sustainability is increasingly important to businesses across every sector. For facilities managers and business owners, one of the most practical areas where sustainability improvements can be made is commercial cleaning — through the products used, the processes followed, and the waste generated.

Here's what green commercial cleaning actually involves, and what questions to ask your cleaning provider.

What Is Green Commercial Cleaning?

Green commercial cleaning refers to cleaning practices that minimise environmental impact without compromising hygiene or effectiveness. It covers three main areas:

Cleaning products. Conventional cleaning chemicals can contain compounds that are harmful to aquatic ecosystems, contribute to indoor air pollution, or leave residues that affect human health. Green cleaning products use biodegradable, plant-based, or low-toxicity formulations that achieve the same cleaning results with a lower environmental footprint.

Processes and methods. Green cleaning also involves using less water, reducing chemical concentrations through correct dilution, and choosing cleaning methods that minimise waste — for example, using microfibre cloths that can be laundered and reused rather than disposable paper products.

Waste and packaging. Professional cleaning companies can reduce waste by using concentrated products with minimal packaging, implementing recycling programmes for consumables, and choosing suppliers with strong environmental credentials.

Does Green Cleaning Work as Well as Conventional Cleaning?

This is the most common concern — and the answer is yes, when products are chosen and used correctly. The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) has published guidance on the effective use of environmentally preferable cleaning products, and the professional cleaning industry has moved significantly towards greener formulations over the past decade.

For most commercial cleaning applications — office cleaning, school cleaning, retail cleaning — green products perform equivalently to conventional ones. For specialist applications such as medical cleaning or food service, the choice of products must be guided by infection control requirements, which take precedence.

What to Ask Your Cleaning Company About Sustainability

If sustainability is important to your business, ask your cleaning provider:

  1. What products do you use, and are they certified? Look for products with recognised environmental certifications such as EU Ecolabel, Nordic Swan, or Cradle to Cradle.
  2. How do you manage chemical dilution? Correct dilution reduces chemical use and cost. Ask whether the company uses dosing systems or relies on staff judgement.
  3. Do you use microfibre? Microfibre cloths and mops require significantly less chemical and water than conventional alternatives.
  4. How do you handle waste? Ask about recycling of packaging, consumables, and cleaning materials.
  5. Do you have an environmental policy? A professional cleaning company should be able to provide a written environmental policy.

Green Cleaning and Your ESG Reporting

For businesses with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting obligations, the environmental credentials of your supply chain — including your cleaning company — are increasingly relevant. Choosing a cleaning provider with documented environmental practices supports your own sustainability reporting.
